Reportedly, Altitude Television is set to produce this revival in collaboration with The Wombles production house. The scriptwriting is being handled by Will Davies, known for his work on 'How to Train Your Dragon' and 'Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile'. The remake aims to give a contemporary spin to the cherished British family series revolving around secretive, furry creatures living beneath Wimbledon Common.
Originally premiering in 1973, The Wombles swiftly rose to popularity across the UK courtesy of its intriguing stop-motion animation and distinct characters. All characters, including Great Uncle Bulgaria, Orinoco, Tobermory and others were immortalized by the iconic voice of Bernard Cribbins, who passed away in 2022 at 93. The series experienced a second run in 1996, introducing three additional characters with a total of 52 ten-minute episodes.
Notably, the series also ventured into the world of music with their own hit 'Remember You’re A Womble' making waves on the UK chart show, 'Top of the Pops'. Meanwhile, speculations about the new voice cast and the possibility of the show retaining its unique stop-motion style remain.
In other news from Altitude Television, they also revealed the upcoming police thriller 'Riot Squad' and a TV adaptation of Chris Hadfield's 'The Apollo Murders', thus enriching the anticipation of the audience for their future line-up.
