Amazon has begun testing a series of humanoid robots, named Digit, in a U.S. warehouse, aiming to increase efficiency and free up employees' time. As stated by the BBC, the company's ambition with these automated robots - capable of walking, as well as handling large trays - is to allow employees to focus more on customer satisfaction. This trial also evaluates whether the machines can safely operate alongside human personnel.
"Our experiment seeks to learn more about the use of mobile robots in our Amazon environment," Scott Dresser of Amazon Robotics explained to the BBC. Although the company received criticism from workers' unions, with warnings from the UK trade union GMB about job losses due to automation escalation, Dresser denied these allegations. He emphasized that new technologies provide opportunities for job creation and expansion.
The tech giant has utilized robots in its warehouses for several years, but the introduction of these humanoid robots, which resemble a scene from a sci-fi movie rather than standard automated machines, signifies a prominent leap forward.
