December sees 123 million hooked on PlayStation Network

Jan 09, 2024 11:20 AM

PlayStation Network has achieved a new milestone in December 2023, with 123 million active users, Sony announced during its CES 2024 press conference. This surpasses the previous record of 112 million monthly users recorded in December 2022. PlayStation Network, which provides free access to all PlayStation console users, shouldn't be confused with PlayStation Plus, a paid subscription service offering various gaming benefits across three tiers. Alongside this announcement, Sony presented a new high-end VR headset and showcased the first images from the upcoming Gravity Rush film at CES 2024, highlighting PlayStation's expansion in gaming and entertainment.

What is the difference between PlayStation Network and PlayStation Plus?

PlayStation Network (PSN) is a free online platform available to all PlayStation console users for accessing multiplayer gaming, digital content, and social features. In contrast, PlayStation Plus is a premium subscription service with multiple tiers that offers online multiplayer access, free monthly games, exclusive discounts, and additional benefits for a fee.

Extra Background Information:

PlayStation Network is a central part of Sony's gaming ecosystem, offering a space for gamers to connect, play, and purchase digital games. The spike in active users is indicative of the platform's popularity and growth, likely driven by exclusive game releases and holiday promotions. Additionally, Sony's CES presence and the mention of Gravity Rush, a well-loved game series known for its unique gravity-manipulating gameplay, in film form signifies Sony's investment in cross-media experiences that extend the reach of its gaming franchises. The original Gravity Rush game was developed by Japan Studio's Team Gravity and released for PlayStation consoles, starting with the PS Vita in 2012, later followed by Gravity Rush 2 for the PS4 in 2017.

As PlayStation Network's user base hits a new high, it's a testament to Sony's solid grip on the virtual playground they've built – making it more than just a place to game but a hub for digital hangouts and entertainment. With PS Plus offering that extra layer of perks, Sony's pretty savvy in giving gamers the VIP treatment while also diving into the film arena with Gravity Rush; they're blending our gaming sessions with movie nights seamlessly.
