In honour of Doctor Who's 60th anniversary, the BBC will release more than 800 episodes of classic Doctor Who on their streaming platform, BBC iPlayer. This will be the first time many of these episodes have been available online. The release includes episodes from Doctor Who spin-offs like The Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood, and Class.
"I'm so excited for new viewers," said Russell T Davies, the current showrunner. He also hinted at exciting plans to bring this massive back catalogue to life and assured fans this wouldn't just be a dormant archive, with much more announcements on the way.
Alongside the episodes, the BBC will also introduce a Doctor Who archive that will explore the show's rich, 60-year history. This initiative will include special features like interviews, documents, and handwritten notes from Sydney Newman, the former BBC Head of Drama.
For the show's upcoming 60th anniversary specials, David Tennant will make a return, and audiences will be introduced to the new Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa. Gatwa is set to feature in the Christmas special and will lead his maiden season starting in 2024.
Director of BBC iPlayer, Dan McGolpin, celebrated the show's milestone by announcing the release of episodes old and new on BBC iPlayer. This will include the earliest adventures with William Hartnell as the Doctor up to the latest series. The episodes will also be readily accessible with added features like subtitles, audio descriptions, and sign language to ensure as many fans as possible can enjoy the viewing experience.
The classic Doctor Who episodes are set to release on BBC iPlayer in the UK on November 1, although there is no word yet on an international release. Fans can keep themselves updated with Doctor Who news, like the Doctor Who Blu-ray set release and which iconic Doctor Who villain will feature on Magic the Gathering.
