PlayStation is actively expanding into India with their India Hero Project, targeting the country's rapidly growing gaming market. The program supports local game developers by potentially providing financial backing, technical assistance, and marketing support to bring their games to PlayStation 5. India's gaming scene, currently dominated by mobile gaming due to affordable high-speed internet and smartphones, is predicted to double in value by 2027.

As part of this initiative, Sony representatives outlined at the India Game Developer Conference that they aim to bring culturally relevant games to the Indian market while also introducing them to a global audience on their next-gen console. The India Hero Project, inspired by the China Hero Project's success, received a variety of game pitches, predominantly in the adventure and shooter genres, with many developers new to the PlayStation platform. This strategy aims to foster an ecosystem where Indian creators have equal opportunities to succeed in the global gaming industry.

The PlayStation team is considering projects that could extend beyond the console, possibly venturing into PC or mobile gaming. With phenomena like Genshin Impact from China, the goal is to replicate similar success with Indian-developed games. The first official game announcements from the India Hero Project are expected between February and April 2024. This move by PlayStation marks a significant step in integrating Indian game developers into the global market and increasing PlayStation's reach within this emerging market.

Notably, Xbox is also pursuing efforts to involve Indian developers through their Global Expansion Incubator, including presentations at the India Game Developer Conference and developer camps. Together, these efforts signal a significant focus on India by major gaming platforms, anticipating the country to soon produce global gaming sensations comparable to those out of China and other regions.
