HBO Revamps: Harry Potter and It Prequels Rebranded

Jun 25, 2024 8:59 PM

Warner Bros. Discovery is rebranding several of its highly anticipated TV shows, including the Harry Potter series and the It prequel, Welcome to Derry, under the HBO Originals category instead of Max. CEO of HBO and Max Content May Bloys explained this decision is based on the similarities found in production and talent between HBO and Max shows. The Harry Potter TV series is expected to be a faithful adaptation of the novels and is set to premiere in 2026. Welcome to Derry, featuring the return of Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, will premiere next year. Additionally, the Green Lantern series titled Lanterns will also be categorized under HBO Originals. Bloys indicated that future Max original shows like The Penguin and Dune: Prophecy might have fit better under the HBO Originals banner if not for international licensing processes already in place.

Why is the Harry Potter TV series being moved under the HBO Originals brand?

The move is due to the realization that the production methods and talent involved in both HBO and Max shows are quite similar, making the HBO Originals branding more suitable for a clearer content delineation.

The Harry Potter TV series is positioned to be a more faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling's novels compared to the original films. Warner Bros. Discovery aims to recapture the magic of the books while introducing it to new audiences. Despite being tight-lipped about specific plot details, reports suggest a comprehensive retelling of the beloved wizarding world is in the works. Daniel Radcliffe, who portrayed Harry Potter in the films, has confirmed he will not make a cameo in the series. Welcome to Derry is designed to expand the lore of the It universe, delving into the horrifying origins of Pennywise the Clown, played once again by Bill Skarsgård. This show will build on the recent success of Andy Muschietti’s It films, providing fans with a deeper understanding of the sinister town of Derry.

Definitely an interesting move by Warner Bros. Discovery to bring heavy-hitters like Harry Potter and Welcome to Derry under the HBO Originals banner. It's clear they're aiming to align their top-tier content for maximum impact and brand consistency—2026 can't come soon enough

Rebranding these shows under HBO Originals seems like a smart move for Warner Bros. Discovery, streamlining their premium content under a single, reputable banner. I'm stoked to see a more faithful Harry Potter series and delve deeper into Pennywise's eerie origins in Welcome to Derry
