James Gunn Promises No More Batman Origin Stories

Jan 05, 2025 11:32 AM

In a recent announcement, James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, confirmed that the new DC Universe (DCU) will not revisit Batman's origin story, which has been portrayed numerous times in film adaptations. Gunn stated that Batman already exists in this universe, similar to Superman, meaning audiences won’t be treated to the familiar tale of his parents' murder again. He mentioned Batman's cameo in the animated series Creature Commandos as an introduction to his character's existence in this new DCU framework. Although there is a new Batman film titled The Brave and the Bold in the works, it won't tie into the existing canon of the DCU, and the sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman has been pushed back to 2027.

Will we see a new Batman movie soon?

While there is a new Batman film titled The Brave and the Bold planned, there is currently no release date available. Moreover, The Batman: Part 2 has been delayed to 2027.

Batman, known as the Dark Knight, is one of DC Comics' most iconic characters, having first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. With multiple adaptations across various media, the Batman franchise includes notable films, TV shows, and animated series. The character's popularity endures due to his complex narratives, diverse rogues’ gallery, and rich lore, making him a staple of superhero culture.

I think it's a smart move for Gunn to skip Batman's origin story this time around—audiences are ready for something fresh, not another retelling of the same tale. Plus, it opens up the creative space for more dynamic storytelling within the DC Universe, especially with intriguing projects like Creature Commandos on the horizon

It's refreshing to see DC moving away from the typical Batman origin story, as we've seen it done so many times; there's a whole universe of adventures waiting to be explored with him already in play. The whole Batman exists, deal with it approach allows for a more dynamic narrative, and I’m excited to see how that affects character interactions in the upcoming projects

It’s refreshing to see DC looking to shake things up by skipping the well-trodden origin story for Batman—let’s get straight to the action With multiple Batmans in the works, it’ll be interesting to see how they manage to keep the character fresh while navigating the crowded superhero landscape.
