MAGIC: THE GATHERING CINEMATIC UNIVERSE IS HERE

Feb 06, 2025 11:46 PM

Hasbro has officially announced plans to develop a shared cinematic universe for Magic: The Gathering, in collaboration with Legendary Entertainment. This venture will focus on both movies and television series, with the movie serving as the primary goal. Legendary, known for its successful adaptations like Dune and Detective Pikachu, aims to treat the beloved IP with the respect it deserves. Interestingly, while reports suggest the new adaptations may not be connected to the previously announced Netflix animated series, it remains to be seen if that series will evolve into part of the larger universe.

Magic: The Gathering, created by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, has established itself as one of the world's leading trading card games. Following its acquisition by Hasbro in 1999, the franchise has expanded significantly, leading to multiple film and series adaptations planned by Hasbro, including new installments of G.I. Joe and a film based on the Power Rangers.

What are the details of the upcoming Magic: The Gathering movie and TV adaptations?

The upcoming adaptations will form a shared universe, with a focus on creating a movie as the first priority, in addition to TV shows. Legendary Entertainment is collaborating with Hasbro to ensure that these adaptations align with the rich lore and history of Magic: The Gathering.

Honestly, a Magic: The Gathering cinematic universe sounds like a dream for fans, but I’m crossing my fingers they nail the tone—too serious and it might lose the charm, too light and it could feel like a missed opportunity. Either way, I’m just here hoping for some epic Planeswalker battles and maybe a cameo from Nicol Bolas to really seal the deal.

It’s exciting to see Magic: The Gathering finally getting the cinematic universe treatment, especially with Legendary Entertainment at the helm—they’ve got a solid track record with adapting niche IPs. That said, I hope they don’t overcomplicate the lore; sometimes less is more when bringing a complex world to the screen.
