In an unexpected turn of events, a developer seems to have leaked the protagonist of Ubisoft's highly-anticipated Assassin’s Creed game codenamed Assassin's Creed Red. According to Eurogamer, Ubisoft's senior writer, Pierre Boudreau, momentarily swapped his LinkedIn cover photo displaying what is likely the lead character of Assassin's Creed Red before promptly reverting back to Assassin Creed's Valhalla's protagonist, Eivor.

The brief glimpse at the new image showcased what appears to be a female assassin wielding a katana against a red backdrop featuring the Japanese Assassin's Creed logo and a pagoda. The image seems to be a part of a bigger one that is cut off. The game, set in feudal Japan, was revealed in September 2022 as the "next premium flagship title and the future of our open-world RPG games". As such, it will likely exhibit a style akin to Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Odyssey, rather than 2023's Mirage.

Apart from a concept trailer showcasing an assassin vaulting onto a roof during sunset, little else is officially known about the game. Another Ubisoft staff member hinted at a potential 2024 launch in a LinkedIn post in July 2023. Leaks have a rich history in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, often emerging from Ubisoft itself.

The most notorious leak involved Assassin's Creed Unity, which was initially leaked after a Ubisoft employee divulged the game's secrets to a fan they sat next to on a plane. Initially, this was met with disbelief until screenshots surfaced a few months later, proving its authenticity. Consequently, Assassin's Creed Red has now joined this long trail of leaks. Assuming the 2024 launch date is accurate, Ubisoft is likely aiming for a holiday release date, similar to Mirage's October 2023 launch. Regardless, official details about this upcoming title remain scanty for now.
