Marvel boss targets Star Trek: Picard S3 showrunner for Vision series

Aug 01, 2024 2:11 PM

Marvel Studios has recently shaken up its plans, most notably replacing Kang with Doctor Doom as the primary antagonist for the Multiverse Saga, with Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role. On the television front, Marvel head Kevin Feige has actively courted Terry Matalas, the showrunner for Star Trek: Picard Season 3, to work on the upcoming Vision series. Feige was so impressed by the third season of Picard that he sought out Matalas, influenced by the show's successful character development and respect for Star Trek: The Next Generation's legacy. This recruitment effort comes as Marvel attempts to inject new creative talent into its struggling Disney+ shows, aiming to replicate the quality seen in Paramount's Star Trek series. Following this, Marvel is also planning another WandaVision spinoff, Agatha All Along, despite recent talks of scaling back their output.

Why did Kevin Feige choose Terry Matalas for the Vision series?n

Kevin Feige was highly impressed with Terry Matalas's work on Star Trek: Picard Season 3, particularly its character development and respectful handling of The Next Generation's legacy. This prompted Feige to actively recruit Matalas, hoping to bring similar quality and depth to Marvel's upcoming Vision series.

Star Trek: Picard, the series that caught Feige's attention, is a part of the larger Star Trek franchise and aired its highly acclaimed third season, which wrapped up the journey of its titular character, Jean-Luc Picard. The series showcased a balance between new storylines and nostalgic elements, which resonated well with fans and critics alike, leading to Matalas's recognition in the industry.

It's wild seeing Doctor Doom finally getting center stage in the MCU, and Robert Downey Jr. coming back makes it even crazier And hey, if the Vision series can capture even a fraction of what made Picard Season 3 awesome, Marvel might just turn the TV ship around.

It's pretty wild that Marvel's calling in Terry Matalas after his stellar work on Picard S3; bringing that level of character depth to the Vision series sounds like a solid move. And swapping in Doctor Doom for Kang as the big bad Talk about shaking things up—I’m here for it
