Monster Hunter Blocks Dino Crisis Reboot, Says Shinki Mikami

Aug 29, 2024 10:56 AM

Dino Crisis creator Shinji Mikami has voiced skepticism about the potential for a remake or new installment of the beloved franchise, attributing its limited prospects to the overwhelming popularity of Capcom's Monster Hunter series. While many fans are eager for more from Dino Crisis, Mikami expressed surprise at this demand, noting that Monster Hunter has effectively claimed the spotlight for dinosaur-themed games. Originally released in 1999, Dino Crisis enjoyed popularity through its first two sequels but has not seen a new entry in over two decades. Despite a 25th-anniversary nod from Capcom, hopes for a revival seem dim in light of the massive success of Monster Hunter, which is set to expand with its upcoming entry, Monster Hunter Wilds in 2025.

Will there ever be a new Dino Crisis game?

While there is significant interest from fans, creator Shinji Mikami believes that the current gaming landscape, dominated by franchises like Monster Hunter, does not favor the revival of Dino Crisis at this time, making the possibility of a new game unlikely.

Dino Crisis is a survival horror game that gained a cult following for its unique blend of horror and action, featuring dinosaurs as its primary adversaries. Originally developed by Capcom, the game is often compared to Resident Evil due to its gameplay style and atmosphere. Despite the series' initial success, its last installment, Dino Crisis 3, released in 2003, failed to capture the magic of its predecessors. With the rise of games like Monster Hunter, which allows players to battle large creatures in dynamic environments, the possibility of a direct revival of Dino Crisis appears slim. Capcom’s recent attempts to explore dinosaur themes, such as with Exoprimal, emphasize this shift in focus away from the survival horror elements that defined Dino Crisis.
