MultiVersus Is Set to Die This Year – No Comeback in Sight

Jan 31, 2025 3:11 PM

The popular fighting game MultiVersus, launched in July 2022, is officially shutting down its online servers. Warner Bros. has announced that connectivity will end on May 30, 2025, coinciding with the conclusion of the game's fifth season. Players can no longer purchase in-game currency, Gleamium, as of now, and any remaining currency must be spent by the season's end. After this date, the game will also be removed from digital storefronts. Despite its initial success, MultiVersus saw a decline in player count, dropping to under 5,000 active players in recent months. The game's development faced challenges, especially after its long offline period between 2022 and 2024, affecting its momentum and player satisfaction.

What caused the decline in MultiVersus' player base?

The decline in MultiVersus' player base can be attributed to a lengthy offline period that interrupted momentum and dissatisfaction with gameplay changes upon its return. These factors contributed to Warner Bros. concluding that the game no longer met expectations.

MultiVersus is a free-to-play crossover fighting game featuring iconic characters from various franchises, including Warner Bros. properties. Upon its initial release, it quickly gained a loyal fanbase, with players enjoying its unique mechanics and diverse character roster. However, the extended downtime and subsequent changes after its return created a disconnect with many players, ultimately leading to its unfortunate shutdown.

Man, it’s wild how a game with such a killer roster and solid mechanics can lose its spark so fast. That long offline gap really felt like a momentum killer, and it’s a bummer the comeback didn’t stick the landing for the fans.

It's always tough to see a game with so much potential fizzle out, especially one that brought together such a fun mix of characters. The extended offline period really seemed to kill the vibe, and it’s a shame the changes post-return didn’t win back the community.
