Valve announced a new version of the Steam Deck with an OLED screen, which features greater repairability compared to the original launch model. The new design simplifies common repairs and requires fewer steps to access components like the action buttons and thumbsticks.

Key improvements include bumper buttons now on the joystick board for easier repairs and increased shock reliability, a unified screw type with machine screws on the system's back, and the use of Torx screws to minimize head stripping during disassembly. Moreover, the Steam Deck OLED doesn't need the backplate to be removed for screen replacement.

Valve's original Steam Deck was praised for being somewhat repair-friendly, with possibilities to replace the thumbstick and upgrade the SSD, although battery repairs proved challenging. It scored a 7 out of 10 on iFixit's repairability assessment. The enhancements on the Steam Deck OLED could inspire upgrades from existing users or attract new customers valuing device longevity and maintainability.
