PLAYSTATION 5 SHIPS 54.8 MILLION UNITS GLOBALLY

Feb 14, 2024 8:07 AM

The gaming industry sees significant milestones as Sony announces that the PlayStation 5 has globally shipped 54.8 million units. In the quarter ending December 2023, 8.2 million PS5 consoles were shipped, marking an increase of 1.1 million units compared to the same period the previous year. However, Sony is unlikely to achieve its target of 25 million PS5 shipments for the fiscal year ending March 31. As of December 31, the total shipped is 16.4 million, requiring 8.6 million units to reach their goal in three months, prompting Sony to adjust the forecast down to 21 million units.

Furthermore, Sony reported 123 million active PlayStation Network users, an increase from last year's figures. Software sales for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 rose, with a total of 89.7 million games sold in the last three months, out of which 66% were digital sales. Marvel's Spider-Man 2, released last fall, has notably sold ten million copies since February 4.

How many active PlayStation Network users are there?

As of the end of the quarter reported, Sony has confirmed there to be 123 million active PlayStation Network users.

In terms of background information, the PlayStation 5, released in November 2020, has experienced supply constraints due to global chip shortages, affecting its availability for consumers. Meanwhile, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a highly anticipated sequel to the successful Marvel's Spider-Man game released in 2018, developed by Insomniac Games and exclusively available on the PlayStation platform. The increasing digital sales trend reflects a broader industry shift towards digital distribution of video games.
