PlayStation Lays Off 8% of Employees, London Studio to Shut Down completely

Feb 27, 2024 2:22 PM

PlayStation's parent company, Sony Interactive Entertainment, is set for a significant reduction in workforce, announcing approx. 900 layoffs globally, which equates to around 8% of its total employees. Major studios affected by this decision include Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, Guerrilla Games, Firesprite, and various creative and support teams within PlayStation. SIE London Studio, known for the Singstar and EyeToy series as well as for PlayStation VR Worlds, is set to close completely. The studio had been developing an online co-op game, but the game's fate is now uncertain.

Jim Ryan, the outgoing CEO, has expressed gratitude towards the affected employees for their contributions; however, he notes that changes in the industry necessitate these layoffs to meet the expectations of developers and gamers and to advance future gaming technology. Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, emphasizes that the cancellations of some in-development projects are not a reflection of the talent or passion of the staff but are a result of market and industry changes. While specific cancelled projects have not been named, Sony had previously cancelled a multiplayer game from The Last of Us with Naughty Dog.

This restructuring at PlayStation follows a broader trend of layoffs in the gaming industry, with other major companies like Microsoft, Unity, Twitch, Riot Games, and several others also announcing significant cuts.

Why is Sony Interactive Entertainment laying off employees?

Sony Interactive Entertainment is laying off employees to adapt to the changing gaming industry and to focus its efforts on delivering high-quality gaming experiences. The layoffs are a strategic move to streamline projects and align with market demands and future gaming technology developments.
