In a recent surprise move, Red Dead Redemption, the popular video game now provides gamers an option to play at an enhanced 60 frames per second (fps). This feature is part of the 1.03 patch update, which is surprisingly lightweight, taking only a few hundred MB of memory. Gamers using PlayStation 5 can avail this option, where the game is compatible via the backwards compatibility feature. Since its launch on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in August, it had been operating at 30 fps only, which was a disappointment to several fans of the thrilling 2010 game. The game, available as a physical copy for PlayStation 4, can be pre-ordered for $49.99 and releases on October 13. However, the game had received some backlash initially, due to the meager performance upgrades and what some thought was a hefty price tag, especially considering the lack of multiplayer option or PC release. It's still worth noting that you can play Red Dead Redemption on Xbox Series X in 4K and it's been available on Microsoft platforms for some time due to backwards compatibility. In defence of the high price point, Strauss Zelnick, head of parent company Take-Two, stated that it was a commercially accurate price. Additionally, Hannah Sage, EVP of Finance at Take-Two, highlighted that the port includes not only the base game but also Undead Nightmare, adding value to the purchase. Speculation is rife about the potential of a next-gen upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2, after a recent Xbox leak mentioned such an update in the works in a Microsoft executive's planning email. The developers at Rockstar Games have yet to comment on this.
