Slim PS5 Requires Internet to Pair Optional Disk Drive to Console

Oct 25, 2023 12:53 PM

The upcoming PlayStation 5 Slim has sparked interest in the videogame community, particularly for its optional disc drive functionality. It has been unveiled that the disc drive requires an internet connection to pair with the console during setup. This announcement has raised game preservation concerns among players.

The charlieINTEL Twitter account showcased images of a Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 PS5 Slim bundle, stirring gamer curiosity and causing quite a stir in the community. The modernized PS5 features 1TB of storage for both the regular and Digital Edition models, with the option to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive to the Digital Edition.

If users choose to purchase the PS5 Digital Edition, the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive can be added for a separate fee of $79.99 or its equivalent in other currencies. Once the existing PS5 model inventory depletes, the PS5 Slim will be the only model available for purchase.

The new PS5 model will retail at varying prices depending on the region, with the PS5 digital model increasing in price due to the introduction of the slim model. The slimmer PS5 with a disc drive costs $50 more than the digital edition, a custom horizontal stand is included with the model, and a separate vertical stand compatible with all PS5 models can be purchased thereafter.

The requirement of the optional disc drive to have an internet connection for setup has proven to be concerning. There are fears of a potential problem in the future if Sony decides to shut down its authentication servers, potentially making the hardware connectivity for the disc drive unavailable.

Meanwhile, rumors about a release date for the PS5 Slim standard edition bundled with Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 are circulating. The leaker Billbil-kun suggests that the bundle launches in the U.S. on November 8, priced at $559.99. It's also indicated that the standalone console versions might be released on November 10.
