Sony and Honda Unveil Car Controlled by PlayStation DualSense Controller

Jan 09, 2024 12:24 PM

In an impressive demonstration at CES 2024, Sony, in partnership with Honda, unveiled a technology demonstration featuring a car controlled by a PlayStation DualSense controller. The vehicle showcased is part of Sony and Honda's collaborative efforts to enrich life experiences, and it exemplifies this with the electric Honda Afeela. The Afeela utilizes Unreal Engine 5.3 to generate 3D maps, aligning it closely with gaming technology. However, this is currently just a technical demonstration, and owners of the Honda Afeela will not be able to control their car with a DualSense controller in the foreseeable future. The integration of gaming technology into automotive applications signals a convergence of both industries, leveraging gaming engines for enhanced vehicle functionalities.

Can you drive the Honda Afeela with a PlayStation DualSense controller?

At this time, it is not possible for Honda Afeela owners to drive their car with a DualSense controller. The demonstration at CES 2024 was purely a tech demo, and there are no current plans to make this feature available for consumers.

The blending of gaming and automotive technologies isn't entirely new, with Unreal Engine having been used in various applications outside of gaming. Unreal Engine, developed by Epic Games, is known for its advanced graphics capabilities and has become a popular choice for creating realistic environments, not just in games but also in simulations, film, and now, the automotive industry. Gaming technology like Unreal Engine offers potential advancements in car visual systems and may lead to more interactive and user-friendly interfaces in future electric vehicles.
