Netflix's highly popular South Korean survival series, Squid Game, is set to become a reality show, despite the controversial idea. The streaming platform shared a full official trailer, offering insight into the challenges contestants will be facing.
Squid Game: The Challenge, will showcase 456 competitors vying for a substantial $4.56 million cash prize, drawing parallels with its scripted counterpart. Contestants, dressed in the iconic green sweat suits and white shoes, will participate in a variety of games to become the last player standing.
Fans of the original series will recognize the games in the trailer, including the infamous Red Light, Green Light from the first episode, and a game of navigating a narrow two-panel bridge. To reassure viewers, the games are far from lethal; for instance, contestants caught moving during the Red Light, Green Light game are eliminated using a black paint-like substance.
Interestingly, the trailer also highlights a few new games, such as a human-sized battleship game that weren't part of the original series. However, with reports earlier this year hinting at unsafe filming environments, the reality show filming has come under scrutiny. Allegations of it being an "inhumane disaster" surfaced, and some contestants allegedly required medical attention due to injuries incurred on set.
The reality show is set to premiere on November 22. Simultaneously, the preparation for the next season of the original series is under way. It's hoped that the reality spin-off series would engage fans during the interim.
