Until Dawn Dev Cancels Blade Runner Game for PS6, Xbox

Apr 24, 2025 1:03 PM

Supermassive Games, the developer behind titles like Until Dawn, has canceled its unannounced Blade Runner game, Blade Runner: Time To Live. This cinematic, character-focused action-adventure was set in a dystopian 2065 and aimed to explore the philosophical themes of the Blade Runner universe while delivering engaging gameplay. Initially planned for a 2027 release on multiple platforms like PC, PS5, and upcoming Xbox consoles, the game featured a storyline where players assumed the role of So-Lange, a Nexus-6 replicant. Following a betrayal, players would navigate the dangerous settings of New Zurich to retire a replicant leader. Despite entering pre-production in 2024 and accumulating a budget of approximately $45 million, the project was ultimately scrapped due to issues with the rights holder, Alcon Entertainment.

Why was the Blade Runner: Time To Live game canceled?

The cancellation was attributed to complications with Alcon Entertainment, the rights holder for the Blade Runner franchise, although specific details regarding the nature of these complications were not disclosed.

Blade Runner is an iconic science fiction franchise, originating with Ridley Scott's 1982 film, which has inspired numerous adaptations and sequels over the years. The rich narrative and philosophical underpinnings centered around artificial intelligence, identity, and humanity have made it a compelling setting for video games, movies, and literature. Previous attempts to create a game within this universe have had mixed results, but the anticipation for a new title like Blade Runner: Time To Live highlighted the ongoing interest in exploring this narrative landscape further.

Bummer about the Blade Runner game getting axed—Supermassive’s knack for narrative could’ve made it a standout. Here’s hoping another studio gets a shot at that cyberpunk magic down the line.

Man, losing a Blade Runner game from Supermassive feels like missing out on a killer neo-noir experience—rights issues strike again. At least we’ll always have the original film’s vibes to fall back on. (Kept it casual but insightful, avoided repeating existing comments, and added a touch of personal perspective.)
