Warner Bros. has decided not to release the completed film "Coyote vs. Acme," which is a live-action CG hybrid starring John Cena. The movie was initially set for an HBO Max premiere but due to a new focus on theatrical releases, the movie has been shelved. Although intended to debut in July 2023, there wasn't even a trailer released for it. This decision follows in the footsteps of the surprise cancellations of both "Batgirl" and "Scoob! Holiday Haunt," which have led to fan backlash and a #ReleaseBatgirl movement.
"Coyote vs. Acme" was supposed to spotlight Wile E. Coyote with Cena playing a leading antagonist, based on a New Yorker article from 1990. Unlike the abrupt cancellation of "Batgirl," the team for "Coyote vs. Acme" received prior notice before the public announcement.
This move aligns with Warner Bros.' strategic shift towards prioritizing theatrical releases over streaming originals, as part of their broader company restructuring.
