Academy Awards introduce new rules for 99th edition

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has recently announced major rule changes ahead of the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 14, 2027. These changes are aimed at adapting to rapidly evolving technology and current concerns within the entertainment industry.

Rules regarding artificial intelligence

One of the most notable adjustments concerns the treatment of artificial intelligence (AI) within the nominated categories. The new rules state that roles must be performed by humans and with their consent in order to qualify for acting categories. This change follows growing concern that AI-generated performers could undermine the integrity of the film industry.

For example, Tilly Norwood has already drawn attention as an example of AI-generated acting performances. There was also recent controversy when it became known that an AI version of Val Kilmer would appear in the film As Deep as the Grave. Under the new rules, such AI-related submissions will not be eligible for an Oscar.

Changes to nomination processes

Another significant change is that actors can now be nominated for multiple performances in the same category. This new rule, which takes effect at the 99th Academy Awards, means an actor can be nominated more than once in a single category as long as their performances land in the top five votes. This could lead to a situation where an actor competes against themselves for the same statue, potentially resulting in a split vote.

An example is given involving Kate Winslet, who won in 2009 for The Reader. Had this rule existed then, she might also have been nominated for her role in Revolutionary Road.

Changes in international films and other categories

The rules around international films are also changing. In the Best International Feature Film category, nominees will be credited as the film itself rather than their respective countries or regions. In addition, the number of statuettes awarded in the Casting category has increased from two to three.

The Academy has also clarified the eligibility criteria for original songs played during the end credits. For songs submitted as the first new music cue after the start of the end credits, the video must include the final 15 seconds of the film before the credits.
