Technical boost with Scott Van Vliet

Alongside Ball, Xbox has also brought in Scott Van Vliet as its new chief technology officer. Van Vliet has a strong background in artificial intelligence and previously worked at Microsoft. His role is focused on improving product development within Xbox.

Van Vliet has a track record in the games industry, with experience at Amazon Game Studios and as head of Mattel's Digital Play team. His appointment comes as Xbox looks to reposition itself in the market with future products, including the still-unnamed Xbox console codenamed Project Helix.

Shifting strategies under Asha Sharma

Asha Sharma, who succeeded Phil Spencer earlier this year, has already made several changes to Xbox's business strategy. One of the most significant decisions was ending the 'Xbox Play Anywhere' campaign. In an internal email, Sharma said the team is focused on creating more clarity and improving execution across Xbox.

Her focus on AI is notable, especially given her own background in the technology. Her earlier attempt to introduce the AI-powered gaming assistant Copilot was recently shelved, underscoring her push to move faster with change.

Despite the positive steps, Microsoft is also facing political pressure over its ties to the Israeli Ministry of Defense and controversial data-handling issues. These circumstances add another layer of difficulty to the strategic reset under Asha Sharma's leadership.
