Battlefield 6: overhaul of a classic map for season 3
Season 3 of Battlefield 6 is just around the corner, bringing exciting news about the biggest update yet. The update introduces a reimagining of an iconic map from the past: Railway to Golmud, a modern version of the beloved Golmud Railway map from Battlefield 4.
The new map: Railway to Golmud
Railway to Golmud is being presented as a tribute to Battlefield community veterans. This rework of a classic map brings improvements and changes designed to appeal to players. Level designer Luka Grepl-Malmgren says that two of the original level artists from Golmud Railway still work at DICE and were closely involved in creating the new version.
At launch, Golmud Railway was known as the largest map in Battlefield 4, and its most memorable feature was the moving train, which remains a key element in the new version. The designers have completely reworked the train’s logic and layout to deliver a more dynamic gameplay experience.
Key changes to the train
In the revamped version, the train will now move toward the enemy team’s headquarters instead of the headquarters of the team that captured the objective. This change is meant to prevent the train from becoming a static part of gameplay. Grepl-Malmgren explains: "In this version, the train is easier to recapture, but the team holding the objective now has a strategic place to spawn and capture the flag closest to the enemy headquarters."
Improvements to the play space
Beyond the train changes, Railway to Golmud includes plenty of updates to improve the play environment. There is more cover for infantry, better flanking opportunities, and additional airspace for improved vertical gameplay. One example of these changes can be seen in the newly released footage of the map.
Some of the biggest criticisms of Battlefield 6 so far have been the limited number of available maps and the lack of large vehicle-focused maps, which are so characteristic of the franchise. Battlefield Studios is looking to address that criticism with the launch of season 3, and it also has plans for even more large maps in the future.
