Diablo 4: Search for the mysterious cow level

The new Diablo 4 expansion, titled Lord of Hatred, has brought some intriguing developments to the hunt for the game’s infamous mysterious cow level. Since Diablo 4 launched in 2023, players have been relentlessly searching for this secret location. The expansion’s revelations have added new clues, but the cow level remains elusive for now.

The cow level tradition

In earlier Diablo games, such as Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, players could find their way to a special cow level that offered both humor and lucrative rewards. Unlike those earlier entries, Blizzard has repeatedly confirmed since Diablo 4’s launch that there will be no cow level in the latest version of the game. Despite those claims, fans’ appetite for the cow level has not faded, resulting in a lively search for clues within the game.

New developments in the expansion

The Lord of Hatred expansion introduced the Horadric Cube, a crafting tool that in earlier games made access to the cow level possible. Players also discovered that previously found mysterious items such as the stamina potion and the rusty bardiche have taken on a new purpose in this expansion. By combining these items with Neyrelle’s hand in the Horadric Cube, players can create a new item: the cow skull Trophy of the Faithful.

Obtaining this trophy promises exciting discoveries, as it leads to a page from a diary. That sends players to a small, longing island near the new Skovos region, where they can board a boat that takes them to a mysterious place filled with cow statues and a cellar. Inside the cellar, players discover a temple where a circle of cows appears to be attempting a magical ritual, adding even more mystique to the cow level mystery.

Blizzard’s teasing and the game’s evolution

Blizzard has continued to play along with fans’ cow level obsession by showing several developers wearing cow-themed shirts during its pre-launch livestream for the expansion. In an interview, Diablo 4 associate game director Zaven Haroutunian even suggested that a secret is waiting in the endgame activity known as The Pit, and that it has not yet been discovered.

At the recently discovered cow island, there are also signs that players may still have a long wait before the cow level is revealed. A room filled with human skeletons, arranged around a cow altar, is labeled “The Waiting Room,” which seems like an ironic hint for anyone hoping to finally catch a glimpse of the long-rumored cow level.

As players prepare to unravel the secrets of the cow level, Blizzard has further expanded the game with a new campaign, two new classes (Paladin and Warlock), and a major overhaul of the skill trees. While opinions are divided on these changes, the expansion has deepened the overall experience. With the game’s ongoing hints and updates, curiosity around the cow level continues, with hopes that this unique tradition may finally get a follow-up in Diablo 4.
