Disney's Infinity Vision and the release of Avengers: Doomsday

Disney has recently unveiled its new cinema format, Infinity Vision, and it has prompted a notable reaction from Imax. It seems Disney's strategy to take on the established Imax system is meant to draw attention away from the announced release of Dune 3, which is also set to arrive on the same day as Avengers: Doomsday.

What is Infinity Vision?

Disney's Infinity Vision positions itself as an alternative to the Imax experience, promising a "bigger, brighter, and more immersive cinematic experience." Infinity Vision screens are designed with the largest displays, laser projection for superior clarity, and premium audio projection for a fully immersive sound experience.

The launch of Infinity Vision will begin with the re-release of Avengers: Endgame on 25 September 2026, a few months before the premiere of Avengers: Doomsday.

The big competition on Dunesday

Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3 are scheduled for release on 18 December 2026, a date that has quickly become known in the film industry as "Dunesday." This double release is set to become one of the biggest box office battles of the year. Imax has confirmed that Dune 3 will run exclusively on its screens for three weeks, putting the launch of Avengers: Doomsday in a tough spot, especially given the competitive nature of the two franchises.

Imax's response and the future of Infinity Vision

Imax has spoken publicly about Disney's announcement, with CFO Natasha Fernandes calling the idea a marketing strategy. She suggested that Infinity Vision's innovation is more about strengthening branding than about real competition.

Fernandes said Marvel fans are usually very sharp moviegoers and that the differences between the Imax experience and what Infinity Vision promises will be easy to spot. That raises the question of how well Infinity Vision can actually perform against Imax's established name in the premium cinema sector.
