Duffer Brothers promise to reveal Eleven's fate in 20 years

The Duffer Brothers, the creators of Netflix hit series "Stranger Things", have said in a recent interview that they’re willing to reveal what happened to Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown, within the next 20 years. The comment came as the brothers reflected on the end of the series, which aired its finale on December 31, 2025.

The creators respond

In an interview with Josh Horowitz for the "Happy, Sad, Confused" podcast, Matt and Ross Duffer discussed their decision to hold off on revealing Eleven’s fate. "If we’re talking to you in 20 years about Stranger Things... that would be great, and then I’ll tell you everything," Ross Duffer said with a laugh. He compared the wait to the long stretch it took Sopranos creator David Chase before he spoke openly about his own finale.

The Duffer Brothers also addressed several fan theories about Eleven’s future. One popular theory is based on a heartbeat sound heard during the finale. Matt Duffer said the sound was described that way in the script, but that it can’t be taken as definitive proof she survived. "It was meant to be interpreted that way, but it doesn’t necessarily mean she’s alive," he said.

Confusion among cast members

After the finale, several cast members, including Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Sadie Sink (Max) and Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), said they believe Eleven may not have survived. Those comments surprised Matt Duffer, who noted it was interesting to see the actors reach that conclusion without discussing what their characters believed with the writers.
