Fear Tall Grass: New dark fantasy creature-battler for Nintendo Switch

Fear Tall Grass, a new dark fantasy creature-battler, has recently been announced for Nintendo Switch. In addition to Nintendo Switch, the game will also be available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Steam. It is being developed by Forgotten Bastions and published by Entalto Publishing, which appears to mark their first major video game project.

Development and publishing of Fear Tall Grass

Forgotten Bastions, the developer behind Fear Tall Grass, is preparing to introduce itself to players with its debut title. Entalto Publishing, the game’s publisher, has already released several titles since its founding in 2022. Its most recent release is SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off, which launched in August 2025. Entalto’s experience publishing a variety of titles will likely help support the development and success of Fear Tall Grass.

Gameplay and story

The reveal trailer released on YouTube introduces players to Gray, a child caught in the middle of a holy war. Players must explore the vast tall grass fields that now cover most of the world and stand against the hostile creatures hiding within them. To overcome these powerful enemies, players will need to tame and capture beasts to use as soldiers in battle.

Fear Tall Grass gameplay puts a strong emphasis on strategy. During a mission, players are presented with a square board that resembles a tabletop game. Players are challenged to roll dice and move their character one tile at a time around the edge of the board. These tiles can provide vital resources or threaten players with a combat encounter. In a combat encounter, the player enters a 2D arena, where their own beast fights the enemy.

Much like in Pokémon, players must take turns commanding their beast, called a Vilekin here, to attack the enemy. Once the opponent is weakened, the player can attempt to capture the creature and add it to their team. The Fear Tall Grass Steam page states that the game will feature 90 Vilekin at launch, with 15 unique types across six different elements. These elements have different resistances and weaknesses against one another, adding extra depth to the gameplay.

The Sanctuary of Light and upgrades

After missions, players return to the Sanctuary of Light, a hub where they can construct new buildings, unlock new mechanics, and explore permanent upgrades to support future runs. This strategic layer adds depth to both combat and exploration missions, encouraging players to adapt their strategy based on what they discover and the resources they collect.

There is currently no official release date for Fear Tall Grass, and it remains unclear whether the game will launch on all platforms at the same time or whether the PC version will arrive first. Gamers are eagerly watching this promising title and its innovative gameplay concept in the world of dark fantasy creature-battlers.
