Final Fantasy XIV: expansion to Nintendo Switch 2 and end of PS4 support

The future of Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) was recently discussed by Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest 2026. Several major announcements were made, including the move to Nintendo Switch 2 and plans to end support for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) version.

Transition to Nintendo Switch 2

The biggest news is that Final Fantasy XIV is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026. During the keynote presentation, a live demo was shown, demonstrating that the Switch 2 version offers challenging gameplay possibilities. Yoshida confirmed that this version of FFXIV will support mouse controls and is targeting 30 frames per second.

A notable detail is that, while the Joy-Con can also be used, players will have the option to connect a mouse and keyboard, which is seen as an advantage for tackling higher difficulty content in the game. For more casual play, players can switch their console to handheld mode, allowing them to stay mobile while gathering or crafting items.

Sunsetting the PS4 version

Yoshida also made it clear that the PS4 version of the game will be phased out over the coming years. The next expansion, Evercold, will launch in January 2027, alongside Patch 8.0. Updates will continue for PS4, but only through Patch 8.3, which is expected to arrive in early 2028.

Yoshida also said that the PS4 is struggling to keep up with the game’s growth. He noted: "We’re reaching the point where the game is getting so big that the hardware itself can’t handle it." He encouraged players to move to PS5 once that becomes financially possible.

Content and performance of the Nintendo Switch 2 version

The Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV is aiming for stable performance despite the platform’s limitations. While lower frame rates may occur in crowded cities, the goal is to consistently hit 30fps. Players will be able to choose from different input options, including full keyboard and mouse support, which should improve the experience in high-level raids.

In addition, players who already have an FFXIV subscription on other platforms will be eligible for a 50% discount on the subscription price for Switch 2.

With the move to new platforms and the game’s continued evolution, players will have more options than ever, while technical upgrades improve the experience. These changes mark a major turning point for Final Fantasy XIV and its community.
