Final Fantasy XIV comes to Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026

Final Fantasy XIV, the popular MMORPG, has announced its arrival on Nintendo Switch 2. Naoki Yoshida, the game’s director and producer, revealed the news during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest 2026. This version of the game is set to be available in August 2026, and is expected to deliver an unprecedented experience for Switch players.

New gameplay options and performance details

During his presentation, Yoshida gave a live demo of the game, where he also discussed the new subscription model for Switch 2. The Final Fantasy XIV version for Nintendo Switch 2 will support mouse controls, which should significantly enhance gameplay. Yoshida confirmed that the game is targeting a framerate of 30 frames per second on the platform. That means performance may fluctuate in busy areas such as cities, but the team is aiming to provide a stable experience.

Yoshida noted that during development he was faced with questions about the Switch 2’s technical specifications compared with more advanced systems. However, he stressed that the team is focused on optimization to ensure the best possible performance on the new hardware.

Flexible play styles

With the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV, players will be free to choose how they play. Whether in handheld mode or docked, there is a strong emphasis on the ability to connect a mouse and keyboard for more intensive gameplay, while casual players can also use handheld mode for gathering or crafting. This adds a fresh dynamic, letting players focus more on the game’s gathering and crafting classes no matter where they are.

Subscription model and discounts

Players interested in playing Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2 should pay attention to the platform-specific subscription model. It is not necessary to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online to play Final Fantasy XIV, but a separate subscription for Switch 2 is required. For existing subscribers on other platforms, however, there is an attractive 50% discount on the Switch 2 subscription model, making the move more affordable.

The free trial for Final Fantasy XIV has also been expanded and now includes the third expansion, Shadowbringers, although the trial still comes with some limitations on in-game features.
