Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave was almost set up nearly twice as large

In brief

  • Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave started as a story with eight protagonists, but was scaled back to four main characters.

The game is coming to Switch 2 and clearly builds on the legacy of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which served as a major inspiration for the new entry. The developers said they wanted Fortune’s Weave to go bigger than that earlier title in several ways, including the number of storylines and perspectives. At the same time, the concept still had to remain readable, especially since the four main characters are followed in parallel before their paths converge into one larger story.

What happened

Beyond those structural choices, the game also has a clear thematic focus. Family sits at the center of Fortune’s Weave, and that theme appears to shape not just the dialogue and backstories, but also the narrative structure itself. The emphasis on bonds fits the decision to use multiple protagonists, each showing a different side of the conflict.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses remains a clear reference point. The developers called that game a major influence on Fortune’s Weave, even if they want the new entry to push further in scale and structure. That shows up not only in the early concept of a larger cast, but also in the way the story combines multiple viewpoints. At the same time, Fortune’s Weave seems to be aiming for a different tone and thematic emphasis than Three Houses, with more focus on family ties and the convergence of different perspectives.

Another notable detail is that the developers say the game’s structure is not just about individual routes, but about converging stories. That makes the comparison with Three Houses natural, but Fortune’s Weave appears to expand that idea and make it more explicit.

A separate topic in the recent explanations is the use of firearms. For the first time in Fire Emblem history, guns appear in Fortune’s Weave. The developers say that choice was not made simply to add something new. According to them, firearms have an in-universe reason, and players may uncover that explanation as the story unfolds.

That detail fits the broader impression that Fortune’s Weave has more layers than first meets the eye. The game also includes a time-travel element, which may give the presence of guns additional context. The developers have not fully explained that yet, but they did make clear that it is not a random gimmick.

The series timeline is also still a topic of debate. Fans have long argued over whether Fortune’s Weave is a prequel or sequel to Three Houses. Returning characters such as Seteth offer some clues, but no definitive answer. For now, the game’s place in the series remains intentionally ambiguous.

Alongside the story structure, several characters have also been revealed early. That happened through the game’s Japanese social media channel, which posted bios and character details before the information was widely available in English. As a result, players got an early look at the cast before launch.

One of the most striking reveals is Jester, a sword-wielding gladiator with a terrifying reputation. In his bio, he is described as someone who hides his face behind clown makeup and constantly makes bizarre, seemingly mad statements. His nickname, “Hell Jester,” reinforces his threatening presence. According to the character description, he enjoys seeing opponents look frightened, making him one of the roster’s more eccentric figures.

The shared details also show that Jester fights with a sword and has a skill that deals more damage after a dodge. That suggests he is designed not only to stand out visually, but also to appeal to players who like a riskier combat style. Fan reactions have already started discussing support conversations and possible romantic endings, since Fire Emblem games often include both platonic and romantic S-rank outcomes.

Other characters have also been profiled. Noctura is a female gladiator from a warlike tribe who moved to the city because she was tired of village life. Nudine is a female mercenary from Dagus, originally from the kingdom of Salamis, and is known as a model fighter. Diego is a quiet young man from the Hal-Hari tribe who swears loyalty to the priest Orhel. Talimun is described as an influential merchant with big ambitions, while Bertrand is a gladiator who has been trapped in a dungeon beneath the arena for five years after committing a major crime. The early wave of reveals shows that Fortune’s Weave is aiming for a broad and diverse cast.

Background

According to the behind-the-scenes explanation, the original plan was to expand the number of story perspectives from three to eight. The developers wanted to create an ambitious ensemble story that would go beyond Three Houses. That direction proved difficult to execute, however. The team found that a structure with eight main characters was too much for the storylines, pacing, and overall cohesion.

The concept was therefore reduced to four main perspectives. That made the story more manageable, but even then one missing piece remained. To connect the separate routes properly, a fifth central figure was added: Eshmel, the first playable protagonist. That role functions in a way that recalls Byleth in Three Houses, with Eshmel acting as a broader observer between the different storylines and helping tie the four main narratives together.

The developers stressed that this extra character was necessary to keep the game’s core idea intact. If the four storylines simply remained side by side, Fortune’s Weave would not feel like one cohesive whole, they said. Eshmel was added to provide an overarching perspective that weaves the separate parts together.
