Heated Rivalry: new details for season 2

Heated Rivalry is a queer hockey drama adapted from Rachel Reid’s Game Changers book series. Jacob Tierney, the series’ creator, writer, and director, has recently revealed key details about the second season.

Season focus and combined material

Tierney has confirmed that season 2 will focus on the sixth book in the series, titled The Long Game, which follows Heated Rivalry, the second book. New storylines will also draw from Role Model, the third book, much like season 1 was based on Game Changers, the first book.

Troy Barrett’s character development

One of the key figures set to be explored further in season 2 is Troy Barrett, who is described as a damaged character. Tierney has said the show will dig deeper into his personality and the challenges he faces. Fans can expect more depth and complexity in Troy’s story and his relationship with Harris Drover.

Shane and Ilya’s relationship

The season will further explore the relationship between Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, but without the tension of the hidden romance that defined season 1. Tierney says season 2 is moving into a more serious tone, with new challenges for the pair to work through, including communication issues within their relationship.

Future developments

In terms of production, filming for season 2 is expected to begin this summer, with a projected spring 2027 release on HBO Max. While Tierney has suggested that The Long Game could be split across two seasons, season 3 has not been officially greenlit.
