I Am Legend 2: development and new details

I Am Legend 2 is in development at Warner Bros., with Steven Caple Jr. attached as director. The follow-up to the original 2007 film is based on Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel and follows Robert Neville, played by Will Smith, a U.S. Army virologist surviving in a post-apocalyptic world hit by a man-made virus.

I Am Legend is a post-apocalyptic action film set in New York City, centered on Robert Neville, who appears to be the last human after a virus outbreak turns most people into zombie-vampire hybrids. Akiva Goldsman, the Oscar-winning writer and producer who also co-wrote the original film, will write the script for I Am Legend 2. He has said the sequel will take place many decades after the first movie. That significant time jump opens the door to a fresh take on the world, with a focus on the shift from a human-dominated planet to one where nature has taken over.

Goldsman has also said that the alternate ending of the first film, in which Neville survives, will be treated as canon. That opens the door to a story more closely aligned with Matheson’s original themes, exploring the downfall of humanity as the dominant species.

The film promises to explore new creative possibilities by focusing on the evolutionary shift taking place in a post-apocalyptic setting. As the world begins to regrow and humanity loses its dominance, visual elements from New York City will play a central role in that exploration.
