Kingdom Hearts 3 gets an impressive multiplayer mod

An enthusiastic team of modders is working on a full multiplayer mod for Kingdom Hearts 3. The mod lets players team up with up to three friends. Selected characters from the game’s cast can be chosen, expanding the gameplay experience.

History of Kingdom Hearts 3

Kingdom Hearts 3 was released in January 2019 and marked an important moment for the franchise. It was the first mainline game released in more than ten years, following several spin-offs after Kingdom Hearts 2. Its launch also brought the Dark Seeker Saga to a close, wrapping up the series’ central story that began with the original game in 2002.

Features of the multiplayer mod

The multiplayer mod, called KH 3 Re: Multiplayer, delivers impressive multiplayer battles in Kingdom Hearts 3. In the latest footage, a team of three players — Sora, Riku, and Kairi — takes on a Darkside in the Dark Margin. Later, Aqua joins in for a fight against the Demon Tide.

The mod supports split-screen play, allowing up to four players to play on one screen at the same time. That opens the door to shared victories, but it also raises questions about the game’s balance.

Balance and gameplay excitement

While the mod is impressive, some fans are concerned about balance. Kingdom Hearts 3 was designed as a single-player RPG, with one player fighting alongside AI companions. Adding multiple players could lower the difficulty, which may make the game feel less challenging to some. For example, the Darkside battle takes just over three minutes with the mod, while the Demon Tide fight lasts less than two minutes.

Kingdom Hearts has experimented with multiplayer gameplay before, though usually as side content. Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days was the first game in the franchise to introduce multiplayer content, letting players control different members of Organization 13. Birth By Sleep also added multiplayer capabilities through the gauntlet-style Mirage Arena. The mobile spin-off Kingdom Hearts X also supported multiplayer raids for up to six players.

Fans are now waiting for official updates on the future of the franchise, especially after Kingdom Hearts 4 was revealed in 2022. Details on the new game remain scarce; for now, only the hub world of Quadratum has been shown. Leaks suggest that worlds from franchises such as Wreck-It Ralph, Zootopia, and even Star Wars could play a role. Kingdom Hearts 4 remains shrouded in mystery for now.
