What happened

On September 21, 2026, Bungie shared more about the future of the studio, Destiny, and Marathon in a video and an official blog post. In that update, studio head Poria Torkan and Josh Dean, head of product and general manager of Marathon, said that Marathon is part of the direction Bungie is taking.

The studio stressed that Marathon is not intended to replace Destiny. Bungie also said Marathon did not reach as many players as hoped and needs to be developed beyond its original extraction-shooter framework.
