Marvel announces Captain Marvel #1 for May 2027 with G. Willow Wilson
Marvel Comics has announced a new ongoing Captain Marvel series at NYCC 2026, written by G. Willow Wilson and drawn by Rachael Stott.
Captain Marvel #1 is scheduled for May 2027 and follows Carol Danvers after the events of Avengers: Armageddon. Marvel is teasing a darker new status quo for Danvers.
In the same announcement round, Marvel also confirmed Daredevil #700 for March 2027.
What happened
Marvel Comics revealed a new Captain Marvel series during a panel at NYCC 2026. It is an ongoing title, with G. Willow Wilson as writer and Rachael Stott as the regular artist. That gives Carol Danvers another ongoing solo series in Marvel’s 2027 publishing plans.
The first issue, Captain Marvel #1, is set to release in May 2027. Marvel is tying the new series to the aftermath of Avengers: Armageddon and says Carol Danvers will be in a different starting position than before. The publisher is clearly positioning the title as a fresh entry point within current continuity.
Marvel describes this new phase as a darker status quo for Danvers. The official description also refers to a threat that has supposedly been growing in the shadows of the Marvel universe for decades, but the publisher has not named it yet. That means the exact enemy or central conflict is still unclear for now.
Alongside Captain Marvel, Marvel also announced Daredevil #700 in the same presentation. That oversized anniversary issue is scheduled for March 2027 and will feature a main story by Stephanie Phillips and Lee Garbett, with a new cover by David Mack. The two announcements were made in the same NYCC 2026 presentation, but they are otherwise unrelated.

Background
The new Captain Marvel series fits into Marvel’s 2027 publishing slate, which includes several major titles and anniversary issues. For Captain Marvel, Marvel has so far only confirmed the creative team, the release month, and its connection to Avengers: Armageddon. No additional creators, guest characters, or format details have been announced yet.
The official description of the series focuses on Carol Danvers as the central figure in a changed situation. Marvel says Danvers will face a darker status quo after Avengers: Armageddon and will have to rethink what it means to be Captain Marvel. The publisher links that to a threat that has been growing in the shadows of the Marvel universe for decades, but without revealing its name.
That leaves several open questions about the series. Marvel has not explained which events from Avengers: Armageddon directly lead to Danvers’ new starting point. It is also not known whether Marvel will add more regular creators to the title later, or whether a supporting cast will be announced down the line.
The timing of the announcement fits into a broader wave of Marvel comic news around NYCC 2026. In the same presentation, Marvel also confirmed Daredevil #700, an oversized anniversary issue due in March 2027. For that issue, Marvel already named a main story by Stephanie Phillips and Lee Garbett, plus a new cover by David Mack, showing that the publisher is lining up multiple major titles for 2027.
For Captain Marvel, the most concrete information for now is the creative core, the release month, and the general direction of the story. Marvel has not yet shared an exact plot summary, a full character list, or the name of the threat it teased. Until more details arrive, Captain Marvel #1 remains a relaunch with one clear date: May 2027.
