PlayStation embraces AI at every level: ‘AI offers more choices for players than ever’
In a recent Sony earnings presentation, Hideaki Nishino, CEO of PlayStation, spoke at length about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the gaming industry and how it could shape PlayStation’s future. His comments outlined a vision in which AI tools are integrated into every part of gaming, from the PlayStation Store to character development at studios like Naughty Dog and Guerrilla Games.
The benefits of AI in game development
Nishino says integrating generative AI and large language model (LLM) technologies can improve the company’s efficiency. “AI will unlock our studios’ creativity, power a more curated platform, and improve the PlayStation experience for both players and creators,” Nishino said.
One example of an AI application is the tool ‘Mockingbird’, which was developed to quickly generate 3D facial animations from performance capture. “With Mockingbird, we can now complete animation work that usually takes hours in a fraction of a second,” he adds. This allows development teams to spend less time on labor-intensive tasks and more time building richer worlds and gameplay.
Practical applications in the industry
AI’s potential goes beyond facial animation. Nishino also mentioned AI-driven racing agents in ‘Gran Turismo’ and experimental NPCs with their own personalities that could help create a more dynamic game world. This experimental path could eventually lead to a generative AI version of Aloy from ‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ having unscripted conversations with players.
The benefits of this technology are already visible in recent releases, with AI tools being adapted by development teams at Naughty Dog and San Diego Studio. However, there are also concerns about game quality. Some developers, including Ashly Burch, the voice of Aloy, have raised concerns about AI’s impact on the artistic performance of games.
The challenges of AI in the gaming industry
Alongside the benefits of AI come challenges. Nishino acknowledged that the growing use of AI and advanced technologies, especially those focused on graphical improvements, has contributed to rising costs in the gaming industry. In particular, he noted that the price of the PS5 has increased by $100 due to economic pressure, including shortages of RAM and other PC components also affected by AI.
As prices rise, Nishino says the PlayStation Store is dealing with an increasing amount of low-quality content. Using AI to help staff manage content could be one solution, but it remains unclear whether AI can effectively address this complex issue or make it worse.
Timeline
May 8, 2026: Hideaki Nishino highlights the role of AI during Sony’s earnings presentation.
2026: The ‘Mockingbird’ tool is introduced for 3D facial animations, significantly reducing development time.
