PlayStation Store gets major changes on PS5
Sony is currently testing a new layout for the PlayStation Store on PS5. The new setup introduces significantly larger image thumbnails and a few other changes. While the updates have not yet been officially confirmed for all PS5 users, a wider rollout would mark the biggest overhaul of the PS Store in more than half a decade. In addition, the PlayStation Store will celebrate its 20th anniversary in November 2026.
History of the PlayStation Store
Sony’s digital marketplace has undergone three major redesigns over the years, with large-scale user interface (UI) changes often lining up with the launch of a new generation of PlayStation consoles. The most significant changes took place in 2008, 2012, and 2020. The upcoming revisions can therefore be seen in a similar light.
Details of the new layout
The first glimpse of the refreshed user interface (UI) became visible on April 11, when a user on X shared a screenshot of the store’s new "Browse" tab. Unlike the current layout, which immerses users in a dense "All Games" grid, the beta version gives more emphasis to a smaller number of titles through large horizontal feature cards. This gives the interface a more curated feel, similar to Netflix’s modern UI.
New features and tags
In addition to the larger images, the beta layout also includes a new feature where each game tile in the carousel automatically starts playing trailer footage when highlighted. The carousel also provides more information about featured titles, including descriptive tags that identify genres and other characteristics. For example, the game "People of Note" is tagged with terms such as "RPG," "turn-based combat," and more.
Timeline
April 11, 2026: The first images of the refreshed PS Store interface appear on social media.
April 12, 2026: The new layout goes live for some beta users in Europe and North America.
November 2026: The PlayStation Store celebrates its 20th anniversary.
Future developments
Sony has not publicly responded to the beta version yet, and it is unclear when a broader rollout of the new layout might happen. As a result, these major PlayStation Store changes may initially remain limited to a small number of beta users before becoming available to the wider public.
