Resident Evil 2 director confirms inspiration for Leon S. Kennedy

The Resident Evil series, one of the most iconic franchises in the horror gaming genre, has a rich history spanning more than 25 years. One of the most recognizable characters in the series is Leon S. Kennedy. Recently, Hideki Kamiya, the director of Resident Evil 2, confirmed where the character’s name came from.

Inspiration from films

After nearly 30 years of speculation, Hideki Kamiya has revealed that Leon S. Kennedy takes his name from the 1994 film Léon: The Professional. The reveal came in a post on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), where Kamiya explained that he suggested the name during a discussion with Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil.

Kamiya recalled that when several name ideas were rejected, he suggested basing the young agent’s name on the recent film he had watched. Mikami agreed with the choice, resulting in one of the most iconic names in gaming history.

The connection to Léon: The Professional

Fans of the Resident Evil series have long drawn a connection between Leon S. Kennedy and the film’s lead character, played by Jean Reno. Beyond the matching names, there are other parallels as well. The Resident Evil series has also long featured a “Professional” difficulty mode, further strengthening the link to the movie.

In addition, Leon carries the handgun named Matilda, a clear reference to Natalie Portman’s character in the film. However, Kamiya clarified that this specific nod was not his idea, but was added by another Capcom team member after he had left the studio.

Kamiya’s confirmation sparked a wave of reactions from Resident Evil fans, who had been speculating about the origin of Leon’s name since the original game launched in 1998. Many welcomed the news as confirmation of their long-running theories.
