The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 arrives in 2026

Amazon has confirmed that the third season of the hit series "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" will arrive in 2026. The new episodes will be available on Prime Video before the end of 2026, contradicting earlier rumors that suggested the season would not land until 2027.

Season 3 and its time jump

The series’ third season will return with a time jump, meaning fans will have waited two years between seasons 2 and 3. That matches the gap that followed the first season premiere. This season picks up the story several years after the events of season 2, with the characters now at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron.

The battle for the One Ring

In season 3, the Dark Lord Sauron is determined to forge the One Ring, an artifact that should give him the upper hand in the struggle for control of Middle-earth. That sets up a tense and intense new chapter, with the heroes facing growing threats and the fallout from earlier conflicts.

Eye-watering costs and future plans

Concerns have been raised about the show’s future, especially given the exorbitant costs tied to production. Amazon has already invested more than $1 billion in the series, making reports about strong viewership and Prime Video sign-ups an important factor. "The Rings of Power" has drawn around 170 million viewers worldwide, making it a major success for the streaming platform.

In 2018, Amazon struck a $250 million deal with the Tolkien estate, publisher HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema that gave it the rights to a five-season project. Despite concerns over season 2 viewership numbers, the series remains under the protective wing of Amazon chief Jeff Bezos.
