Robert Downey Jr. returns as Victor Von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel Studios has officially announced that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Victor Von Doom in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday. This surprising casting choice was revealed by Kevin Feige during CinemaCon 2026.

The return of an icon

Downey, who first appeared as Tony Stark in the original Iron Man film in 2008, made his final MCU appearance in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. After his retirement, Marvel Studios kept in touch with him. Feige said the multiverse concept gives them the freedom to make unexpected choices: "It's our universe. It's a multiverse. We can do what we want."

Why Victor Von Doom?

The decision to cast Downey as the iconic villain Victor Von Doom is partly based on his talent and the strong ties he has with the studio. Feige explained that Downey is "embedded" in the MCU and that ongoing conversations about a possible return happened at various points. Some of those talks took place while Downey was preparing for his Oscar-winning role in Oppenheimer.

A new take on Doctor Doom

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who are handling Avengers: Doomsday and its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, have stressed how important this new interpretation of Doctor Doom will be for the Marvel universe. Anthony Russo noted: "With Doom, we're dealing with the extreme problem, his power is so immense and so far-reaching. That frees us up on a creative and artistic level to explore where the complexity and vulnerability of the character lies."

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, with Secret Wars set to wrap up the new story a year later, on December 17, 2027. Meanwhile, several other MCU projects are in the pipeline, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Punisher: One Last Kill, which serve as bridges to the new film releases.

Fans can look forward to the return of one of the MCU's core figures as the world of superheroes continues to expand into the multiverse.
