Rust 2: developer denies rumors about new game

A Steam page for "Rust 2" recently appeared, leading many gamers to believe that a sequel to the popular game Rust was in the works. However, Garry Newman, founder of developer Facepunch, has made it clear that there are currently no plans for a Rust 2, despite the excitement the page caused.

The disappearance of the Rust 2 page

The Steam page for Rust 2 appeared without any images or specific details. Newman later said, "No idea what that is all about." That lack of information led SteamDB, a third-party site that tracks the Steam database, to flag the page as "suspicious." They said the page could potentially be "malicious or an imitation of another product."

Reactions from the development team

Alistair McFarlane, COO of Facepunch, responded to a Reddit post about the Rust 2 page with the cryptic comment: "You saw nothing." Another Facepunch developer added that the Rust 2 page on Steam was "fake/not ours." That sparked speculation about what it could mean for the future of the series.

In an earlier interview in 2023, Garry Newman said that "Rust 2 will definitely not be a Unity game." This refers to the controversial changes that have taken place within the Unity engine. Facepunch itself has also been in the news recently, with McFarlane saying the team could potentially invest $25 million to buy the MMO New World, which Amazon will shut down in January 2027.

The original Rust, a multiplayer survival game, launched on PC in 2013 and has grown in popularity ever since.
