SteamDB has flagged the listing as suspicious, as it may be a malicious product or an imitation. Despite the uncertainty, Alistair McFarlane, COO of Facepunch Games, responded on Reddit with the message: "You saw nothing." That statement has fueled speculation that this could be a marketing stunt.

Possible implications for the future

If the leak turns out to be real, Rust 2 could represent a major leap forward for the franchise. With the many new features added to Rust since launch, Facepunch Studios may have a wealth of ideas to further evolve the formula in a potential sequel. Last year, during discussions around Unity’s changed terms, Garry Newman, Facepunch’s founder, stated that Rust 2 would not be a Unity game, given the rising costs. Since then, little has been revealed about the sequel’s progress.
