According to remarks from Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks during the quarterly update, Lorwyn: Eclipsed not only beat its predecessor by a significant margin, but Secrets of Strixhaven has now improved on those sales figures again. This marks a notable shift in the performance of premier sets, which introduce new, first-party cards into the Standard format.

Why premier sets matter

Premier sets like Secrets of Strixhaven play a crucial role in both sales and the overall Magic: The Gathering experience. These releases are designed to keep players supplied with fresh cards and strategies, boosting the game’s appeal. In this specific financial context, sets from the Universes Beyond line, such as Final Fantasy, are excluded from the sales comparison, even though Final Fantasy remains the best MTG set ever with $200 million in a single day.

The strong sales of Secrets of Strixhaven helped drive a 13 percent year-over-year increase in Hasbro’s Q1 revenue. Magic: The Gathering revenue specifically rose by 36 percent. This is a clear sign that Hasbro’s product lines and releases continue to fuel excitement and interest among players.

Future developments

Hasbro has invested heavily in digital gaming. So far, $1 billion has been invested in video games since 2018, leading to the creation of six game studios and the development of several new titles. Cocks said the company’s future focus will be on action-adventure and role-playing games for PC and consoles, while continuing to work with leading developers in the industry.
