Sega cancels 'Super Game' and focuses on classic revivals

Sega has recently confirmed that the 'Super Game' project, announced nearly five years ago, has been canceled. The decision came to light during the presentation of its fiscal 2026 financial results, which showed that the performance of its live-service games fell short of expectations.

Background on 'Super Game'

'Super Game' was announced in 2021 as part of Sega's broader strategic vision. The goal was to create a game that would be revolutionary and attract a much larger active user base than any of the group's previous titles. Sega had ambitious plans, with a sales target of 100 billion yen (around $634 million) for the project and a potential investment of up to 100 billion yen (around $882 million) over a five-year period.

The decision to cancel

The cancellation of 'Super Game' was confirmed after a review of Sega's strategy around free-to-play games, which have delivered disappointing results. Nearly 100 developers who had previously worked on free-to-play titles have been reassigned to teams focused on 'full games'. Sega has said it is refocusing on its core intellectual properties (IPs) and the development of classic titles.

Ongoing projects

Despite the cancellation of 'Super Game', Sega remains committed to reviving classic games. Titles such as 'Crazy Taxi', 'Golden Axe', 'Jet Set Radio', and 'Shinobi' are still in development. The new 'Crazy Taxi', for example, is being promoted as an open-world multiplayer experience. The team behind the original 'Jet Set Radio' is also involved in the remake, raising expectations for the project.
