Sega cancels Super Game, but new Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio are on the way

Sega has recently announced that its Super Game project has been canceled, an ambitious plan first revealed in 2021. The cancellation was disclosed during the company’s fiscal year 2026 financial results presentation on May 12, 2026. Despite Super Game being shelved, several of Sega’s popular franchises remain in development, including Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, and Streets of Rage. These projects were first shown during The Game Awards, which took place on December 8, 2023.

Super Game project canceled

Super Game was intended to combine several innovative elements, including NFTs, social networking, and cloud streaming. However, Sega has decided to shut the project down, nearly five years after it was announced. The move marks a significant shift toward developing new entries in its established franchises.

New titles in development

Sega has confirmed that it is working on new versions of some of its most beloved franchises. The following titles are currently in development:

• Crazy Taxi

• Golden Axe

• Jet Set Radio

• Streets of Rage

The specific release dates for these new titles have not yet been announced. During the reveal at The Game Awards, fans were treated to a trailer showcasing the various upcoming games.

Crazy Taxi in a new setting

For the new Crazy Taxi, Sega has promised an open world that is expected to be set in a California-inspired environment. This refreshed concept will also include MMO elements, allowing players to explore a dynamic and interactive world. Crazy Taxi originally launched in arcades in 1999, with a Dreamcast version following in 2000. The last entry in the franchise was Crazy Taxi Tycoon, released on mobile platforms in 2017.

Return of classic franchises

Alongside Crazy Taxi, developers are working on new versions of Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, and Streets of Rage. Golden Axe began in arcades and was first released in 1989, while Jet Set Radio made its debut on Dreamcast in 2000, then known as Jet Grind Radio. Streets of Rage, which first arrived on the Sega Genesis in 1991, most recently received a new entry with Streets of Rage 4 in 2020. Details on the updated versions of these titles remain limited.

With these announcements, Sega appears to be preparing an exciting future for its classic franchises while applying lessons from the past to the development of its new titles.
