Shuhei Yoshida and the future of PlayStation

Shuhei Yoshida, a veteran of Sony’s game development efforts, has played a notable role in the evolution of PlayStation in recent years. He served for more than a decade as president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, where he was involved in the development of some of the industry’s most iconic games.

Yoshida’s influence on major titles such as God of War, Uncharted, The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima earned him a prominent place in PlayStation history. Under his leadership, these franchises were not only commercially successful, but also praised by critics for their innovative approach and immersive storytelling. Ghost of Tsushima, in particular, is often mentioned as one of the last major projects he was closely involved with.

Changes within Sony

In 2019, with the PlayStation 5 launch approaching, Yoshida was replaced by Hermen Hulst, head of Guerrilla Games. The decision came amid strategic shifts within the company under Jim Ryan, who took over during a period of major change. Those changes included a focus on live-service gaming and significant acquisitions across the video game industry, but they also led to the closure of several studios and the cancellation of multiple games.
