Steam Deck 2: active development and no release date in sight

Valve has confirmed that the company is actively working on Steam Deck 2, the successor to its popular handheld gaming PC. Development is moving along steadily, but no specific release date has been announced so far. The current status of Steam Deck 2

According to Valve, the company is "working hard" on Steam Deck 2. Pierre-Loup Griffais, a developer at Valve, has said the focus is on creating a device that would represent a meaningful upgrade over the original Steam Deck. That means Valve only wants to bring a new handheld to market if it is convinced the performance gains are substantial.

The first Steam Deck launched in February 2022. At the time, supply could not keep up with demand, and it was only during the 2022 holiday season that availability finally matched expectations. In November 2023, Valve released an OLED model of the Steam Deck, offering improved display quality.

Technological progress

Griffais has suggested that major technological improvements will be needed before Steam Deck 2 can launch. The current focus is on advances in chip technology and architectural improvements. Valve has a "pretty good idea" of what the next model will offer, but is waiting for the right technology to become available to meet those expectations.

Rising costs and shortages of key components across the industry, especially memory and storage, have also affected the development of new hardware, including the Steam Machine and Steam Frame, both of which are planned for 2026.

Current industry challenges

An RNG (Random Number Generator) crisis has complicated production of Steam Deck 2, just as it has for other devices. The current market requires products to get closer to the cutting edge, which means even a small delay in component availability can have a major impact on development. Several companies, including AyaNeo, have had to pause preorders for new handhelds because of rising costs and the availability of important parts.

Despite the challenges and market dynamics, gamers are still eagerly waiting for Steam Deck 2, which is expected to improve battery life and overall performance. Valve appears determined to wait until the technology is ready to deliver a true successor to the original device.
