In February 2026, it became known that the ongoing RAM shortage was severely affecting the production and distribution of several Valve hardware product lines, including the Steam Deck. This led to a situation where Steam Deck inventory was completely sold out and could not be replenished.

Valve's explanation of its approach

Pierre-Loup Griffais, a programmer at Valve, spoke about this during a recent presentation that was part of the marketing campaign for the new Steam Controller. He said the company is aware of the current turbulence in the supply chain and the difficult conditions around shipping and production. "We are aware that there are a lot of considerations around shipping, as well as memory and production issues. We are trying to solve this," Griffais said.

Future approaches to hardware production

Griffais also stated that Valve is focusing on a diversified approach to sourcing components. This includes working with multiple manufacturers to avoid relying on a single source. According to Griffais, this strategy is crucial to minimizing future shortages and price fluctuations, especially given the recent microcontroller shortage during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although the new Steam Controller is not affected by the RAM shortage, the Steam Machine has faced concerns about supply reliability. Griffais said Valve was able to manage the impact of the memory issues, but that it remains challenging for hardware still in development.

In the meantime, Valve remains committed to improving the customer experience and stabilizing Steam Deck stock as quickly as possible, although there is still considerable uncertainty around delivery dates.
