The Super Mario Galaxy movie comes to digital stores next week

Nintendo and Illumination have announced that The Super Mario Galaxy movie will be available on digital platforms on May 19, 2026. That comes a little over a month after its theatrical debut in April 2026. The digital release will include more than an hour of exclusive bonus content.

The digital version of the film includes several featurettes that take viewers behind the scenes. One of the main segments is ‘NEXT LEVEL: MAKING THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE’, which highlights the creative process at Nintendo and Illumination. This featurette offers insight into how the filmmakers and cast brought their vision for the iconic characters to life.

The film also includes ‘CAST OF CHARACTERS’, a featurette focused on the voices behind the characters. The actors involved explain how they brought the familiar Mario characters to life, including Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Bowser.

A major part of the bonus content is ‘GALACTIC THEMATICS’, which explores the emotional core of the film through the relationships between the characters. It offers a deeper look at the themes running throughout the movie.

Box office success

Ahead of its digital release, the film has already made a strong impact in theaters. So far, The Super Mario Galaxy movie has grossed more than $942 million. For comparison, the earlier Super Mario movie from 2023 earned more than $1 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film of 2023. Even though the new film has fallen slightly behind its predecessor, it remains the biggest movie of 2026 so far.

Physical release and future projects

Fans of The Super Mario Galaxy movie can also look forward to a Blu-ray release on June 16, 2026. That edition will also include extra content, though details have not yet been confirmed.

Illumination and Nintendo are already working on more films in their shared animated movie universe. Another film is scheduled for release in 2028, suggesting the partnership between the two studios will continue to expand.
