United Kingdom considers heavy social restrictions for games aimed at children

The safety and well-being of young children who play games such as Roblox, Fortnite and Minecraft has increasingly become a topic of discussion among governments worldwide. Recently, Kanishka Narayan, the United Kingdom's online safety minister, proposed a potentially drastic solution that would prevent children from communicating with strangers on their chosen gaming platform.

Possible measures

Following discussions about a ban on social media for teenagers, Narayan suggested that a blanket ban making it impossible for children to talk to strangers in online games could be part of those social media restrictions. He stressed that activity on gaming platforms "will play a significant role in my thinking about how we stop some of the most serious harms to young people."

Government comment

To date, however, the UK government has not made a formal decision on moving forward with such a ban. The Times reported that the government is studying Australia's social media measures for children under 16, which came into effect last year. It is important to note, however, that Australia has not imposed restrictions on games under these guidelines, but did introduce a ban on Twitch.

International pressure and Roblox

Of all the major gaming platforms aimed at children, Roblox may have faced the most pressure from international lawmakers. Australia has warned the platform following reports of grooming and sexually inappropriate content. In addition, the Florida attorney general has accused Roblox of recreating an environment conducive to predators, while the Texas attorney general has sued Roblox Corporation over allegations of child abuse.

Roblox response

In response to growing concerns, Roblox Corporation has pledged to work harder to protect children from interacting with strangers. It also announced a $12 million investment in creating a safer online environment for children.
